Hi Andy - I really enjoyed reading about your journey. I love understanding how different people approach their crafts, whether it's musicans composing, comics building their bits or authors birthing a compelling story into the world. I love learning about all of that! I'm curious - did you take any formal classes or informal lessons (youtube, etc.) or did you find writing to be an innate talent of yours?
Thank you, Alan. I enjoyed english class in high school but didn't take any creative writing classes in college. I did have a lot of informal mentors along the way in learning the craft of storytelling -- reading accounts of history written in a narrative style, learning from people breaking down movie scenes, pundits critiquing TV shows, and even pro wrestlers being interviewed about wrestling psychology. In pro wrestling, for example - taking the psychology and storytelling in one match and how to build that into the ups and downs of a rivalry lasting several months. Worldbuilding and running sessions in D&D and other games also helped to round out my approach to storytelling.
Roleplaying, or just using some elements of randomization or gamification, are great ways to trigger creativity!
Totally agree!
